Unsung Exposes What Really Goes on in the Music Industry

The best television shows connect with viewers so deeply they inspire viewers to examine and change their own lives. Winning television shows touch something deep within viewers, leaving a lasting impression. TV One’s “Unsung” is one of those programs.

Cathy Hughes TV One Unsung Strikes a Winning Chord

TV One, another creation from media maven Cathy Hughes, is off to another winning season. Upcoming shows feature Atlantic Starr, Bobby Womack, Vesta, Full Force and Sheila E., to name a few. The popular television show takes viewers behind the scenes and reveals real life challenges, triumphs, regrets, successes and heartaches experienced by some of the music industry’s top R&B artists.

One viewing of “Unsung” and it’s easy to see how Nielsen ratings can show that the average American spends 20 percent of his day watching television. Monday nights, helping to boost Nielsen ratings, starting at 10 o’clock (when “Unsung” airs), televisions in many African American homes are tuned to TV One. Now in its fifth season, “Unsung” has won a NAACP Image Award. It has also gained a place in the hearts of television viewers.

Musical Artists Featured on Television’s Unsung

Last year “Unsung” featured musicians and artists from diverse background, artists like Billy Preston (a heart wrenching story), The Ohio Players, Donny Hathaway, Mary Wells, The Sylvers, DeBarge and Sylvester James. Other upcoming shows for the 2012 season feature artists such as Whodini, Ray Parker, Jr. and David Ruffin (one of the Temptations smoothest leading vocalist).

Interviews with the featured artists, members of their immediate family, managers and friends are a highlight of TV One’s “Unsung.” Television viewers can appreciate how the shows create an arc, starting with the artists’ childhoods, musical development years, rise to stardom, followed by challenges and heartaches. However, one of the most compelling and appealing components of “Unsung” comes from within the featured artists themselves. It’s hard to miss. Once viewers spot it, it becomes abundantly clear how the featured artists made it to the top. That winning component is simply this – commitment.

Not all artists featured on the television show “Unsung” continue to focus on a career in the music industry. However, they all remain committed to living the best life possible. Some of the artists, like powerhouse vocalist, Vesta, were mapping out a return, steps to strengthen their careers. Even still, some artists featured on the popular television show never stopped their careers, all signs of commitment, the same qualities viewers may realize they need themselves if they want to launch, strengthen and realize their own dreams.
