7 Essential Skills and Qualities You Need to Land Your Next High Paying Job

An employer is looking for you, seeking your talents and skills. Even in down economies, creative business leaders are hiring. After all, organizations cannot operate absent a strong workforce. Your job is to make it easy for creative business leaders to find you, recognize what you bring to the table and understand why their organizations will be stronger, improved, if you’re a part of their workforce.

7 Job Skills and Qualities Essential to Career Success

More than 17 years of human resource work has shown me that creative business leaders seek a range of specific skills and qualities in employees. It doesn’t matter what your occupation is. Possess communication, time management, project management and team building skills and qualities like integrity, commitment and enthusiasm and you can move to the front of the job hunt line. But first you need to know why you need these skills, so you will know how to provide concrete examples that show you definitely possess these seven essential skills and qualities on your resume, in your portfolio and in your job cover letters.

To start, when it comes to communication skills, you need to show creative business leaders that you have both written and oral communication skills. If you’re writing skills are weak, consider taking a short course (e.g. certificate, diploma) at your local community college. You can also search for and take free online writing courses to improve your skills. If you’re oral communication skills are weak, consider checking out tips listed at organizations like Toastmasters. It’s worth the effort, because written and oral communication skills are top skills employers look for regardless of occupation or industry.

Strong project and time management skills save creative business leaders money. It’s these two skills that allow you to consistently turn work in on time, a habit that can build employer and colleague trust in your abilities. Furthermore, since employers are in business to make money, possess these two skills and you’ll be seen as an asset. If you also know how to lead project teams, that’s all the better.

Value of the Seven Essential Job Skills and Qualities

You don’t have to be a manager to benefit from having team building skills. Team building skills help you to work with colleagues to avoid or manage through work related conflicts, endorse and celebrate ideas that other team members share without claiming the ideas as your own, encourage excellence in colleagues and acknowledge contributions everyone on the team makes. A simple, “Great job on cleaning up the year-end comp file, Sharon!” can go a long way toward team building.

In regards to integrity, commitment and enthusiasm, all the talent and skill in the world won’t keep you from being a liability to a company if you don’t have these three. For starters, lack of integrity, can lead lawsuits and lowered employee morale.  Come up short on commitment and enthusiasm and, in addition to eroding employee morale, you might see a drop in customer sales, a factor that will, sooner or later, impact your salary and employment.

As with communication skills, if you think you need to brush up on your team building, project management or time management skills, consider taking a course at a local college. If you’re already employed and looking for a better job, think about signing up to take these courses for free through your current employer’s learning and development program. In fact, your employer might have a database of internal courses (e.g. electronic and classroom) you can register for to improve these skills.

If you’re seeking employment, be sure to provide examples of how you used these seven essential job skills and qualities at your previous jobs. You can even include examples of how you lead community initiatives on your resume to show that you possess one or more of the skills.
