Ten Ways Small Business Owners Can Stay Healthy at Work

By Rhonda Campbell

The demands of operating a company can take their toll on the health of small business owners after awhile. However, this does not have to happen. To maintain optimum health as they do what it takes to manage, expand and grow their companies, small business owners can incorporate ten steps into their daily and weekly routines.

Ten “Easy” Steps Small Business Owners Can Take to Stay Healthy

Even if small business owners, including self employed workers, log long hours, they can find time to monitor and improve their health. To start, they can:

  • Eat a healthy breakfast of fiber, fruit and/or vegetables (yes, vegetables)
  • Drink at least six, 8-ounce glasses of water today (by carrying an environmentally friendly water bottle to their desk in the morning, this becomes quite easy)
  • Take the stairs when they visit clients, return to the office, etc.
  • Park at the back end of the company parking lot so they can enjoy a brisk walk into work (creative business leaders who work from home can do 10 minutes of calisthenics in the morning and again at the end of the work day)
  • Going for a walk or jog for 20-30 minutes during their lunch break (this may also encourage creative business leaders to build walking/jogging trails around their company property to encourage employees to stay healthy as well)
  • Cut out coffee and caffeine (coffee has come to symbolize the “working Americans” beverage, but it’s time to get a new symbol)
  • Get sufficient sleep (everyone needs a different amount of sleep at night; however, seven to nine hours are thought to be good)
  • Spend time with family and friends (laughter and having fun do wonders for the human system)
  • Listen to positive news, music, etc.
  • Celebrate their successes in non-monetary ways (e.g. treat themselves to a free park jazz concert, write about their successes in a journal, leave work early on days they reach business milestones)

Good health is necessary to manage and grow companies. Even as small business owners strive to fulfill marketing objectives and improve customer sales it is important that they get the right amount of energy, mental clarity and emotional balance to thrive. In fact, when small business leaders are healthy, they can have a positive impact on their employees and contractors, setting examples for their workforce on the value of taking care of one’s health.

Go for a walk halfway thru the workday. Get outside and enjoy the sunshine, especially with spring being here! Yeah!! No need in getting fat just because you own a business.
