Importance of Loving What You Do as a Creative Small Business Leader

By Rhonda Campbell

The importance of loving what you do as a creative small business leader cannot be overstated. As Tim Sanders, former Chief Solutions Officer at Yahoo! said, “Business people who are the busiest, the happiest, and the most prosperous are the ones who are the most generous with their knowledge and their expertise. People who love what they’re doing, how love to learn new things, to meet new people, and to share what and whom they know with others: these are the people who wind up creating the new economic value and, as a result, moving their companies forward.”

Creative Small Business Leaders Discovering What They Love Most

Whether companies grow fast or slowly, surprises are ahead. Companies owned by creative small business leaders that grow too fast may not be able to fill customer needs, orders coming in faster than companies can fill and ship them. Companies that grow too slowly may experience cash flow challenges. Both situations can push creative business leaders who aren’t truly passionate about what their companies do out the door, seeking respite from the headwinds of entrepreneurialism.

This is where ambition comes in. As John D. Rockefeller said, “The man who starts out simply with the idea of getting rich won’t succeed; you must have a larger ambition.” However, it takes passion to sustain ambition. Some ways creative business leaders can tell if they truly love what they do (this includes managing teams, finances, marketing, etc. and not just the technical aspects of a job) are to think back to what they loved to do most when they were kids, asking themselves what they would do right now if they were guaranteed to succeed at anything they tried and considering what they think about most frequently during the day and night.

Importance of Creative Small Business Leaders Loving What They Do

As a side note, this is also a way for creative small business leaders to tell when they’re ready to move onto new ventures, places up ahead where new, yet undeveloped passions await them. After all, and regardless of the industries or financial markets their small businesses operate in, the world of the creative business entrepreneur is filled with certainties, unknowns, challenges and triumphs. Change is ever present, creating a seemingly moving target of business goals and objectives. There are days when there seems to be enough time to complete tasks, other days when 24 hours hardly seem to be enough to get half the day’s projects finished.

If creative small business leaders aren’t careful, mapping their companies’ finances can start to feel too much like riding a tall, long rollercoaster, one without seatbelts and guard rails. Loving what they do can give these leaders the energy to keep pushing forward. In good and challenging financial markets, by loving what they do creative business leaders can also gain new insights, tips and hunches on steps they can take to get out of tight spots, get their employees more engaged in everyday work processes and find supportive business partners. By loving what they do, creative business entrepreneurs can find the energy to keep going until they succeed.
