Successfully Navigate Blogging Ups and Downs

A solopreneur I recently interviewed told me that to keep up with what’s going on in the business and social environments (daily), in addition to reading major newspapers like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, she reads certain blogging websites. Her statement surprised me, revealing how influential blogging has become.

Oh, the impact of a blog that offers tips, advice and insight you can start using and taking advantage of immediately. It’s easy to understand why millions of people subscribe to certain blogs, reading them faithfully every day. However, even the best blogs experience down periods.

What It Takes to Turn a New Blog into a Successful Blog
Unless your blog is an anomaly, you can generally expect it to take at least three months (don’t be surprised if it takes longer) for your blog to start attracting hundreds of visitors a day. Additionally, you may have to conduct feature interviews with leaders in the industry your blog focuses on. Other steps you can take to grow your blogging websites include:

• Offering free web applications at your blogs
• Writing blog posts in your own, unique voice and style (people love sincerity)
• Focusing on topics that you’re passionate about
• Posting slide shows (although I’m not a fan of slide shows, they can attract readers) and videos at your blogs
• Adding pictures, images, logos, etc. to blog posts
• Using unique keywords and meta tags at your blogs, keywords that people use to find the type of data you showcase at your blogs

By submitting your blogging websites to directories and search engines, you could also pull in hundreds and thousands of readers. Add subscription icons to your blog, and you could turn some of those readers into subscribers.


What you might not want to hear is that, despite your best efforts, the action steps you take and the time you dedicate to your blogs — you’re going to have to learn how to successfully navigate blogging ups and downs. And it won’t just be Google algorithm updates that you’ll have to deal with, changes that can cut your blogs’ visitors by 10 or more percent in a single day.

You’ll also have to use blogging tools like Tynt and Copyscape to find out if other website owners are using your blog content at their websites. And, of course, blog posts that were once popular will drop off in popularity, requiring you to keep writing and publishing hot articles. In other words, as it is in life, after you create blogging websites, to be successful, you’re going to have to navigate change.

You’re going to have to stay open to trying new things, perhaps innovative and risky things, to continue to grow your blogs. After all, what worked for you two years ago, may not work tomorrow. So, stay open to change. Be willing to try new ways to attract and engage readers. And, most of all, continue to write from your heart, about topics you’re genuinely interested in and passionate about.
