Typical Entrepreneurial Path

By Rhonda Campbell

Did you take the typical entrepreneurial path, or did you chart a different course? Was the route you took toward becoming a business owner so atypical, it seemed as if you sort of “stumbled” into business ownership? After all, who knows? You might be someone who gets a kick out of going against the grain, taking the path least traveled.

That’s not a bad thing . . . going against the grain. However, by following a well worn path, you might increase the chances that you’ll experience certain outcomes.

It’s not a downer. As an entrepreneur, taking a well worn (or well traveled) path doesn’t always equate into a lack of appetite for risk taking. Fact is, simply starting a company takes some level of risks.  Entrepreneurs aren’t given crystal balls, detailing how each week, month or year of their business (not to mention all the things that can occur in a leader’s personal life) is going to go.

Starting a business takes courage, confidence and vision.

If you didn’t start out on a typical entrepreneurial path, are you considering getting on that path now that you’ve been in business a few months or years and haven’t yielded the results you wanted? Following are a few paths entrepreneurs take. Do you see yourself on any of these roads?

Regardless of the path you start out taking, there’s a likelihood that you’ll experience change somewhere along the way. For example, you might have to move from part-time business ownership to managing your company full-time. Could come due to a layoff, personal move, etc. The point is to keep moving, to reassess where you are every now and then and to be willing to change as needed, so you keep moving forward, closer to fulfilling bigger and better goals and dreams.
