While in Chattanooga, Erica discovered that she had a gift for working with youth, including youth who faced academic challenges. This discovery would springboard into a teaching career which spanned across several years.

Connecting Culture, Books and Community

During the Off The Shelf Books Talk Radio feature interview Erica is expected to get candid with Off The Shelf host, Denise Turney, an experienced interviewer and established book author. In addition to exploring the impact of cultural awareness on students, families and communities, Erica and Denise will discuss childhood literacy, the role that schools can play in teaching youth about their own and other cultures and the connection between indie bookstores and local communities.

At the heart of the feature interview is the work that Erica does through Culture Books, an organization that Erica founded a year before she retired from school teaching. About Culture Books, it’s said – “We are dedicated to bringing books of culture into high risk communities. We want to build literacy confidence through cultural storytelling events, cultural awareness, and a literacy program. “Bridging the gaps between literacy and culture.”
