Balance Not Workaholism is in Order for Creative Business Leaders

Don’t Give Into the Temptation to Work More

Temptation may feel or taste sweet; however, giving into it can also come at a cost. A temptation to work long hours, rarely taking a break to enjoy spending time with family and friends, is a lure creative business leaders may face. In fact, from 1970 to 2006 the amount of time adults worked during a year increased by 200 hours.

Does the list of items you give yourself to complete at the start of the workday look something like this?

  • Write and distribute press releases announcing the launch of company’s new product line
  • Call insurance company and negotiate lower employee healthcare premiums
  • File quarterly state and federal taxes
  • Increase numbers of in-bound links to our six company websites
  • Hire five experienced freelance writers to create five to six sticky daily blog posts at our websites
  • Schedule interview with local television station to discuss our company’s involvement in Saturday’s charity event
  • Ensure technology rolls out new Content Management System (CMS) to writers and editors by the end of the week
  • Post content to social networks to increase traffic to company websites
  • Upload videos of latest local, regional and national industry-wide interviews conducted by our company to our website and the Internet as a whole
  • Finish next two chapters of How to Social Network for Success book

Don’t You Deserve a Little “You Time” Too?

If so, you know how challenging it can be to peel away from your desk and take time to enjoy yourself. After all, as several famous boxers have said over the years, when you do what your competition won’t, you rise to the top. On the flip side, if you never take time to relax you can also “burn out,” something no one wants. Preview the below chart on workaholism and ask yourself if you could benefit from “stepping away” from work, even if only for one to two hours a day more than you normally do.

Don’t get out of the race. Keep doing what you love!  Just take the time to breathe deeply, enjoying the fruit of your labor, what you work so hard for. You might even receive one or more brilliant insights while you’re resting, insights you might have missed had you continued to bury yourself in piles of work.
