Importance of Enjoying Being Self-Employed

Direct Yourself Toward Greater Business Success

Little is as exciting as starting your own creative business. Dreams flow like river water days and weeks prior to the launch of your business, for days and weeks afterward too. Then economists start spouting their doomsday predictions, and before you know it, you’re not feeling so grand anymore. However, if you truly appreciate what you do as a creative business leader, it may very well be worth it to stay the course and enjoy the self-directing business ride. After all, as Henry Ford said, “Business is never so healthy as when, like a chicken, it must do a certain amount of scratching around for what it gets.”

The ability to enjoy the self-directing business ride starts at the beginning. It’s important that you start a business in a field or industry you’re passionate about. Why? As with nearly everything else in life, your business may experience ups and downs. There may be times when sales are a plenty; there may be times when sales seem to have evaporated like water drying against a chalkboard. Passion can keep you fueled until your product line expands, you receive an innovative business idea to act upon or until consumer confidence increases and your sales rebound.

To Gain Staying Power Love What You Do

It’s just as challenging to only work for money if you’re working for yourself as it is to only work for money for another employer. Love what you do and you may likely continue to be drawn back to your work, regardless of the business sales climate. In this “staying power” you may arrive upon an insight or action step you can take that will launch your business forward at a pace that may leave even you amazed.

In addition to starting and operating your creative business in a field you love, you can also enjoy the self-directing business ride if you:

  • Connect with two to five customers a day, getting their direct feedback regarding your products and services. If you’ve ever listened to a customer gush about or praise your products or services, you know how energizing this can be.
  • Greet two to five employees (if you have employees) each day (little beats rewarding relationships between people sharing common goals – to make your creative business a success)
  • Write down five things you appreciate about your business, including operating your own company, every day
  • Listen to positive and uplifting messages (tuning into the news throughout the day probably won’t help you pull this off)
  • Take one day a week to relax and simply enjoy life

It may be tempting to push yourself at all hours of the day and night in efforts to become as big as America Online (AOL) or Bank of America (BAC) or as socially popular as Twitter or Facebook; however, after your creative business has been in operation for several years when you look back at these times it may likely be the people connections you had that stand out the most. And if you operate your creative business in a field or industry you’re passionate about it may also be the excitement, appreciation and positive energy you felt while you worked that jog your memory most, filling your thoughts with a welcomed charm.
