An entrepreneur must court the unknown

By Rhonda Campbell
The great American poet, Robert Frost, ended his insightful poem “The Road Not Taken” with “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” It takes courage to take the road less traveled by, the path that may, in fact, offer the greatest resistance.

Get ready for success, certain change, as an entrepreneur

If it was an easy road to trod, more would take it. Such are the choices that an entrepreneur makes . . . over and over again. Regular paychecks and long-term client contracts go out the window when you become an entrepreneur. To continue learning (and it’s wise that you do), you’re going to have to search for and register to take training programs on your own. There’s no training or learning and development coordinator holding your hand after you strike out on your own.

Successes may be long or short lived. In other words, you or your firm might generate thousands or millions a month in revenues only to experience a drop off after five or more years of record breaking highs. If you’re smart, you’ve been preparing for this shift, shoring up cash flows.

Because you’re passionate about charting your own course, you’ll develop patents, start your own media programs (i.e. radio shows, television shows), build technology devices and/or design your own service formats. Being part of the crowd isn’t your goal. You’re cool with taking on leadership roles. You’ve got the shoulders to stand up beneath mistakes you might make.

You’re going to need to continue to strengthen your leadership skills and seek out and court the unknown to keep succeeding as an entrepreneur. There aren’t many resting posts out here on this less traveled road. Stay creative, alert, ever aware and passionate for what you do.

Believe in yourself even when it looks like you shouldn’t. After all, it’s not that you started out on a less traveled road that’ll make all the difference, it’s that you stayed on the road, letting each experience you encountered awaken you for the better as you, in turn, sharpened those touched by the experiences.

And whether you know it or not, people are watching you. They really do want to see how you do on this road you’ve chosen. Do well, my friend. Do well.
