Gaining Holistic Balance as a Small Business Owner

By Rhonda Campbell
Today’s work world demands a holistic lifestyle.

It’s been said that no one can find a way to get more work done the way a busy person can. Other folks revert to excuses, avoiding the chance that they might be expected to complete another project. This might sound as if busy folks are wiser stewards of time and energy. It may be awhile before we know if that’s a fact or not. What it does, for certain, is reveal the fact that people with busy crammed-jammed schedules, people like small business owners, may put work ahead of every other area of their life. This high speed, non holistic lifestyle, comes at a price.

Living Holistically as a Small Business Owner
Making work-work-work a top priority might help small business owners develop products at faster rates. It might help small business owners increase sales and profits. It might help small business owners strengthen their brands, positioning themselves as industry leaders. But, that’s not all making work a top priority could do.

Small business owners who make work a top priority, placing work above their family relationships, friendships and physical and emotional fitness, could also endanger their health and risk experiencing burnout. Even if small business owners are passionate about their work (love what they do every day), they could risk burnout if they don’t ensure that they’re living holistic lives.

Living a holistic life means small business owners exercise regularly, get outside four or more days a week, eat a healthy diet and treat themselves to time alone with family and friends. To live a holistic life, small business owners can also develop a support group, people who can listen to their challenges and concerns, offering them advice. After all, fewer jobs are more stressful and demanding as the job of being a small business owner.

Another step small business owners can take to start living holistically is to join professional organizations that hold online and offline networking events. At networking events, small business owners can listen to other business leaders discuss challenges they are experiencing. This could keep small business owners from feeling as if trials they are experiencing are unique to them. Small business owners can also discover new strategies and action steps they can take to manage employee issues, increase sales, engage community members and strengthen their brand while attending networking events.

The return on investment small business owners can receive as they commit to living holistically, may help extend small business owners physical experiences. It might also help keep small business owners fully engaged in their companies in positive, rewarding ways.
